ONE person died with Covid-19 in the New Forest, according to the latest weekly update, breaking a fortnight’s run of zero deaths being reported.

The Office for National Statistics said there was one fatality in a hospital in the district. It brings the local coronavirus death toll so far this year to 131, including 66 in care homes.

The BCP Council area, which includes Christchurch, recorded its third consecutive week without a Covid-19 death being reported. The total number of fatalities in the conurbation stands at 186.

The numbers are for deaths which occurred up to 10th July but were registered up to 18th July.

The low weekly death numbers contrast with worst-case scenario planning for up to 50% of the population of Hampshire to contract the coronavirus in a potential second wave.

Simon Bryant, director of public health at Hampshire County Council, said: “While the number of cases has fallen substantially, it is important that we continue to consider what resources may be required across our geographical area should a second significant surge take place.

“In doing this, we use data to help us consider what a reasonable worst case scenario might look like – affecting up to 50% of the local population.”

The preparation is by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Resilience Forum (LRF) which comprises key organisations from across the region including local authorities, the NHS, Hampshire Constabulary and the fire service.

Mr Bryant added: “Planning for a reasonable worst case scenario is standard practice of LRFs nationally in the management of any major incident.

“It does not mean that this is what we expect to happen, as we have plans in place to ensure swift action is taken in response to local outbreaks, with fast test-and-trace follow-up.

“The important thing to remember is that we all have a role to play in helping to prevent an increase in cases – washing hands frequently, keeping our distance, and wearing face coverings where required, will help ensure that the gains we made during lockdown stay with us.”
