Christchurch Carnival weekend at Christchurch Quay
A SPECTACULAR fireworks display will illuminate Christchurch quay tomorrow (Saturday) as the town’s annual carnival weekend returns.
To start tomorrow from 10am-10pm at the town quay there will be live music, a fun fair, food stalls, beer tents and traders, all rounded off with colourful pyrotechnics in the evening.
The traditional Sunday carnival parade will not go ahead this year but instead organisers have arranged a dog show, with live music and a grand raffle prize draw on the Quomps.
Tomorrow the carnival event will open at 10am on the Quomps with Team Rockit Urban Display set to entertain crowds with high-energy bicycle stunts.
Billed as a high-energy show, mountain bike athletes will be performing a series of daring feats on a purpose-built rig, demonstrating tricks that require incredible balance, accuracy – and an element of crazy.
A carnival committee spokesperson said: “Using head mics to communicate with the crowd, the riders will have the whole audience rooting for them to nail their manoeuvres. Expect a victory back-flip or two!”
The fun will continue into the afternoon with further dancing displays, workouts and live music from local bands.
The evening carnival programme includes music from a Cher tribute and Total Madness before the firework spectacular brings proceedings to a close.
The event spokesperson said: “We are the Christchurch carnival committee and we have been around for more than 100 years.
“Each year we organize a fun weekend for all the family. This includes a series of displays and fun activities on the quay, as well as music, events, a funfair and to round off an impressive and free fireworks display in the evening.
“Come and join in the fun for free, please bring along your loose change and donate to help us to raise valuable funds for our Christchurch charities.”
