Powerful and exhilarating the award-winning show Hamilton is at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton.
THE wait was finally over as the breathtaking musical Hamilton opened at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre as part of the show’s first UK tour.
Blending fiery hip-hop, rap, jazz, and blues, the fast-paced and electrifying production focuses on the story of one of America’s founding fathers Alexander Hamilton.
Hailed as “the story of America then, as told by America now”, with show, book, music and lyrics by Lin Manuel Miranda, Hamilton has been a phenomenon since its 2015 Broadway debut. The story chronicles Hamilton’s dramatic journey from a Caribbean orphan to George Washington’s right-hand man, who became a pivotal figure.
With a relentless drive and unwavering confidence, Hamilton formed strategic alliances with the powerful that helped to shape the political foundations of America. As the confidant of George Washington before he became president, Hamilton shared his political ideology through hundreds of essays.
However, it was Hamilton’s unrelenting ambition which also spurred a legion of enemies who conspired to bring his political career crashing down.
The story is fast-paced and slick with a truly exceptional cast who belt out rapid-fire lyrics with the same urgency that defined Hamilton’s character. The electrifying My Shot rap and the hip-hop-inspired The Rooms Where It Happens, combined with tender ballads like Burn and Helpless to exceptional effect.
Marley Fenton delivered a compelling performance in the titular role, while Roshani Abbey shone as Eliza Hamilton, navigating the character’s emotional journey perfectly. Chasity Crisp was also exceptional as Angelica Schuyler, Hamilton’s close friend and confidant, who was also the elder sister of his adoring wife Eliza.
Louis Maskell as King George III had perfect comedic timing – with the hilarious You’ll be Back delivering a moment of light-hearted relief. Akmed Junior Khemalai’s portrayal of George Washington was another highlight.
Billy Nevers as Aaron Burr was also exceptional, and his emotionally charged rendition of The Room Where It Happens was another memorable high note. The complex relationship between Hamilton and Burr leading to a catastrophic crescendo was depicted with raw intensity. Supporting the exceptional cast were a truly remarkable and talented ensemble who maintained the pace of the story.
As the winner of 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, seven Olivier Awards, 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, the dynamic show is certainly an exhilarating theatrical experience not to be missed.
