WEST End hit Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) will be on stage at Southampton Mayflower Theatre as part of a celebration to mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth.
The winner of an Olivier Award for Best Comedy, Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) is billed as a unique and audacious retelling of Jane Austen’s most iconic love story.
Men, money and microphones will be fought over in this irreverent but affectionate adaptation where the stakes couldn’t be higher when it comes to romance.
The multi-award-winning production features a string of pop classics including Young Hearts Run Free, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and You’re So Vain. It’s the 1800s. It’s party time. Let the ruthless matchmaking begin.
First published in 1813, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is set in rural England at the turn of the 19th century. It tells the story of the Bennet family, and especially the spirited and smart Elizabeth Bennet.
The central plot revolves around the blossoming relationship between Elizabeth and the wealthy and rather aloft Mr Darcy as their initial misunderstanding of each other begins to grow into something new.
Written by Isobel McArthur, who also directs this new production, the plot of Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) aligns closely to the Austen novel, but with modern language and the all-female cast playing multiple characters, both servants and gentry, to retell the novel's events through the servants' eyes.
The cast includes Eleanor Kane, Emma Rose Creaner, Rhianna McGreevy, Naomi Preston Low; and Christine Steel. Also joining the company are Susie Barrett, Georgia May Firth, and Isobel Donkin.
Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) is on stage at Southampton Mayflower Theatre from 10th to 14th June. Tickets are from £10. For more information and bookings visit mayflower.org.uk or contact the box office on 023 8071 1811.
