George Orwell’s 1984 comes to Lighthouse Poole
A THRILLING new stage version of George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 will be on stage at Lighthouse Poole for a six-night run.
Based on the book which left an indelible mark on the 20th century and still resonates and reverberates into the 21st, the Theatre Royal Bath Productions drama is based on a new version created for the stage by Ryan Craig. It is directed by Lindsay Posner.
Ryan’s recent work includes Charlotte and Theodore. Nominated as Most Promising Playwright at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards in 2005, he has gone on to win acclaim for the Holy Rosenbergs and Our Class at the National Theatre, The Glass Room and Filthy Business at Hampstead Theatre.
On 4th April 1984, Winston Smith, comrade 6079, starts a diary. In a world where every action is painstakingly monitored and controlled, this simple act puts Winston’s life in jeopardy. A clandestine love affair with co-worker Julia further enrages the authorities, but can they truly trust each other? And what of the mysterious O’Brien? Will he help them overthrow the regime, confront them with their most terrifying fears, or worse?
Shocking and fantastical when written in 1949, Orwell’s novel has remained one of the most chillingly prescient novels of the last century.
The production stars Keith Allen who has a string of credits to his name including films The Others, Shallow Grave, 24 Hour Party People and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, as well as on the small screen Marcella, Bodies, My Mad Fat Diary, Making Out, Robin Hood (as the Sheriff of Nottingham). On stage his credits include The Homecoming, Pinter 3: Landscape/A Kind of Alaska in the West End, David Hare’s Murmuring Judges at the National Theatre, and The Celebration and The Room directed by Harold Pinter at the Almeida Theatre and in New York.
Meanwhile, director Lindsay is one of the UK’s most sought-after, with recent credits that include West End runs of Noises Off and A View From The Bridge.
George Orwell’s 1984 is at Lighthouse Poole from Monday 7th to Saturday 12th October. Tickets are from £25. For more information visit www.lighthousepoole.co.uk or call 01202 280000.
