On Saturday 8th February BSO will perform African Rhapsodies at Lighthouse Poole. The Nottingham-based Sengalese composer and kora player Seckou Keita is proud to present African Rhapsodies in collaboration with Italian composer and musician Davide Mantovani. This enchanting work celebrates Africa’s magical 22-stringed harp and raises the question of whether Bach or Beethoven might have composed for kora if they had travelled to Africa in their lifetime.

Nicknamed “the Hendrix of the Kora”, Seckou Keita has been celebrated for his ingenious tunings and has performed all over the globe as a solo artist.

On Wednesday 12th February BSO will perform Cello Elegy Beethoven at Lighthouse Poole.

Conducted by Alexander Soddy, Elgar’s Cello Concerto was written in the summer of 1919 and represented the angst, despair and disillusionment the composer felt after the Great War. One of the leading cellists of her generation, Laura van der Heijden, takes on this mighty piece.

The concert also includes R Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration, a piece which portrays a dying man recalling the great loves of his past, in an emotional cauldron of sheer magnificence.

Love is in the air on Saturday 15th February for a Valentine Classics concert at the Lighthouse. Featuring some of classical music’s most romantic pieces, the BSO will feature Shakespeare’s tale of two star-crossed lovers, as well as a host of arias and songs, from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro to I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady and My Heart Will Go On from Titanic.

Concert tickets are priced from £10. For more information and details of the full BSO concert programme, visit https://bsolive.com/events
