What’s On: Cycle Cinema Mary Poppins, Community Centre, Lyndhurst

PEDALLING will provide the power during a special screening of Mary Poppins at Lyndhurst Community Centre on Sunday.

Billed as an unforgettable cinema experience in which audiences create the magic, Electric Pedals will be popping up for the special Culture in Common event on 24th November from 4pm to 6pm.

The film will be 100% human powered, with the electricity for the performance being produced by an audience of cyclists. With bikes of all sizes available, everyone from the littlest riders to the seasoned cyclists will be able to join in. No cycling experience is necessary.

A spokesperson for Electric Pedals said: “Our bicycle-powered cinemas are 100% human powered and completely off-grid. All the electricity for the performance is produced by the cyclists. There are no batteries, generators or back-up power sources. Clean, efficient and sustainable; we arrive at each event with no stored power, and leave with nothing.”

Mary Poppins, released in 1964, has been chosen to celebrate the Lyndhurst Community Centre’s 60th anniversary. For the last six decades the centre has provided a social meeting place for the community, holding regular events including film nights, fitness classes and crafting.

The event forms part of a wider events programme delivered by Culture in Common, an Arts Council-funded project which works with local people to bring live events and activities to community spaces across the New Forest.

A spokesperson for Culture In Common said: “Bring your family, friends, or just yourself, and if you’d like to, hop on one of our stationary bikes to help generate the energy needed to keep the film rolling. This event will be held indoors and refreshments will be available.

“The event takes another step towards delivering more climate friendly events. Having generated their own energy, we hope that people will think about energy consumption and are encouraged to suggest ideas for more sustainable entertainment in the New Forest.”

Tickets are priced £6 for adults £5 for under-18s, or £18 for a family. To book visit: https://cultureincommon.co.uk/event/cycle-cinema
