Hailed as a powerhouse vocalist whose versatility transcends genre boundaries, Brooks has enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades which has seen her performing rock, blues and jazz.

Her musical career began in her teens when she won a talent contest that led to touring with prominent artists like the Beatles and the Small Faces. Early work included stints with jazz bands and a brief period in the blues-rock fusion band Dada, which later evolved into Vinegar Joe, where she shared vocal duties with Robert Palmer.

A career turning point came in the mid-1970s when Brooks embarked on her solo career. Her powerful voice and captivating stage presence quickly garnered attention, and album like Two Days Away and Pearls solidified her status as a leading female vocalist in the UK.

Throughout the 1980s, she continued to enjoy a string of successful albums and singles, including Fool (If You Think It’s Over) and No More the Fool. Her dynamic performances earned her a reputation as the British queen of blues.

Her career has continued to thrive in the decades since, with consistent touring and album releases. She has also been recognised for her contributions to the industry, receiving accolades such as the Gold Badge Award of Merit from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

Elkie Brooks will be at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre on Sunday 2nd March at 7.30pm as part of her Long Farewell Tour. Tickets are £45 but we’ve teamed up with the Pavilion to give away a pair of tickets by answering the question in this week’s What’s On Competition (find the entry form in your A&T, out this Friday 14th February).
