Southern Water invests £4 million into Ashurst Bridge sewer upgrade
SOUTHERN Water is pumping £4 million into upgrading the sewer network at Ashurst Bridge near Totton.
Engineers are currently relining more than 500 metres of sewer system in a project that will last around three weeks.
The company said the sewer in the area has suffered “several bursts” over the last five years, which has resulted in “disruption and inconvenience” for the local community.
After carrying out a number of investigations to assess the issues, the company said it is now working on a “long-term solution” to prevent the pressurised sewer, also known as a rising main, from bursting again.
Southern Water project engineer Jason Masters said: “We want to put an end to the regular disruption our customers in this area have faced over the last few years.
“We’re delighted to now get started on a solution that will make a real difference. By relining this section of sewer it will provide much-needed resilience to our network and reduce the likelihood of future issues.
“We know this work over the next three weeks will be disruptive and we’re sorry for the impact it is causing – but we know this will make a huge difference in the long run.
"During the project, dozens of tankers will be in use as we manage flows to reduce the impact on customers. We’re sorry for the disruption this is causing."
The company added that further work to alleviate issues with the sewer system is set to take place over the next two years.
