Characters from popular children’s books including Willy Wonka, 101 Dalmatians and Alice in Wonderland brought to life at Netley Marsh carnival
CHARACTERS from popular children’s books brought a flash of colour to this year’s Netley Marsh carnival.
The annual event, which took place on Saturday, saw locals line the streets to see the parade which included a mixture of floats and walking entries.
Children’s books was the theme for this year, with entries including Alice in Wonderland, 101 Dalmatians and Willy Wonka.
The procession included carnival queen Emily Willis (11), who was looking regal alongside princesses Elizabeth Jooste-Brown (6) and Kara Child (10) as well as members of Stanley’s Own Scout and Guide Band.
It left The Gamekeeper pub at 1.30pm and travelled along Woodlands Road before ending at St Matthews Church, where a summer fair was held from 2pm.
Judges Judith Turvey, Margaret Fahey and Warren Turvey had the tough job of choosing who to award winners’ rosettes to due to the high standard of entries.
Scooping first place in the group walking category was 2nd Netley Marsh Brownies as 101 Dalmatians.
Second place went to 1st Netley Marsh Guides dressed as Alice in Wonderland followed by 1st Netley Marsh Rainbows in third as the Ugly Duckling.
Woodlands Pre-School came first in the non-group walking entry with their take on Pirates Love Underpants.
In the float section Netley Marsh Cubs came first as Willy Wonka while second and third place went to New Forest North Phoenix Scouts as Where’s Wally and 6th Netley Marsh Beavers as The Day The Crayons Quit.
The event raises money for Netley Marsh Guides and Scouts, as well as the church hall.
