A MOTORIST was badly hurt when a BMW ploughed into a Brockenhurst railway bridge yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.

The incident involving the sports car took place on the B3055 Sway Road around 12.20pm, leaving its driver, a man in his 30s, trapped inside.

Firefighters from Brockenhurst and Lymington spent about 45 minutes cutting the male casualty free.

Paramedic response to the crash included the Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance and a hazardous area response team.

The casualty was treated at the scene for serious injuries before being taken by road to Southampton General Hospital's major trauma centre. The helicopter's medical team travelled with him in the ambulance.

Officers closed off the road at its junction with Tilebarn Lane and on the staggered crossroads south of the Sway Lane junction. The closures remained in place until the late evening, according to the force spokesperson.
