Body of man in his 60s found as fire rips through home in Esdaile Lane, Burley




A MAN was found dead as firefighters battled a blaze which ripped through a house in Burley in the early hours.

Crews from across the New Forest were called to Esdaile Lane shortly before 3.30am on Saturday.

The body of a man, whom the A&T understands was in his 60s, was later discovered inside.

Several fire engines remained at the scene throughout the morning as the crews fought to contain the emergency.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Our crews were called to a serious house fire in Esdaile Lane, Burley, at 3.25am on 16th July.

“Sadly, police have confirmed that a body was found within the address.

“Multiple fire engines were in attendance throughout the morning, with firefighters damping down and carrying out community safety activity at neighbouring properties.

“The stop message was received at 2.28pm but crews stayed to monitor hotspots and assist police colleagues for a number of hours.”

The fire service and Hampshire police have launched an investigation in a bid to establish the cause of the blaze.

A force spokesperson said: “The death of a man aged in his 60s is not currently being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner in due course.

"Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances and cause of the fire."

Local resident Simon Rowley paid tribute to the man, who he said was very well known in the community having been a member of the Burley Club.

“I found him to be a really friendly, likeable guy,” he told the A&T.

“He always would help people out – he was just that sort of person. He was a very good person to have in your village.”
