A chance to learn fun, theatrical and liberating Burlesque is coming to Lymington as Kate Welfare, AKA Brie Van D’Pants, hosts workshops

A CHANCE to learn a “sexy tease” form of dance that is glamorous, theatrical and fun is coming to Lymington.

Kate Welfare’s alter ego is Brie Van D’Pants, a saucy burlesque dancer who has her own stage show.

She is now hosting classes for people who want to release their “inner goddess”.

Burlesque dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and has been made popular again by American star Dita Von Teese.

Kate, from Lymington, first started performing 10 years ago while she was living in Brighton.

She said: “My background is in theatre and drama – I have always loved performing.

“I took a beginner’s course in burlesque and just loved it. I love the moves and the way it makes you feel so confident and sexy.”

After moving back to the New Forest area, Kate was disappointed to find that there was not much of a burlesque scene so decided to start her own.

“I do workshops through my company ‘Theratease’,” she said. “I called it that because I really think burlesque can do so much good for someone.

“It’s fun and it really is all about body image and being proud of your body. It’s funny seeing women coming through the door who are not confident at all, who by the end of the session are just feeling so sexy and proud of themselves.”

Burlesque dancers wear risqué costumes and perform a strip tease, often leaving them just covered with a feather fan– but they never expose themselves fully to the audience.

Kate said: “Students are asked to create a character. Some are so shy to start with but by the end have really let go and feel totally liberated.

“We end the course by performing in front of a small audience.”

Kate has taster burlesque workshops in Lymington on 15th July at midday, and 20th July at 6pm. There is also one on 3rd August at 6pm

Anyone interested in taking part can contact Kate by emailing kate.carr85@gmail.com

Those interested in seeing Kate perform can attend her show at Hanger Farm in Totton on 15th September.

Tickets are priced £10 in advance and £12 on the door. Visit minsteadtrust.org.uk/hanger-farm
