Having suffered swelling around his eye, he later attended hospital for treatment as a precaution.

Three passengers were on board the bus at the time, but a spokesperson for Bluestar said they escaped unhurt.

General manager Richard Tyldsley said: “The safety of our drivers and passengers is paramount, and we are carrying out an urgent investigation into the incident.

“These actions are highly dangerous, and we are working with police to identify those responsible.

“We will seek to prosecute anyone found to be responsible for this mindless act of vandalism.”

A Hampshire police spokesperson said the incident was under investigation but no arrests had been made by Tuesday.
