Business leaders sought to join Solent Freeport board to help shape its future success
BUSINESS leaders are being sought to become directors on the board of the newly created Solent Freeport to help shape its future success.
As reported in the A&T, the freeport status, which became official last December, is set to bring tax relief, simplified customs procedures and a streamlined planning process to promote regeneration and innovation.
Supporters of the scheme, which covers areas in Marchwood, Fawley and some parts of Southampton, hailed it as a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity.
Now the organisation is looking to recruit four business leaders to join the board as non-executive directors, as well as taking up key positions as committee chairs to help shape the success of the freeport.
These include deputy chair of the Solent Freeport and chair of the operations and delivery committee, chair of the retained rates investment committee, chair of the finance, resources and audit committee and chair of the remuneration, employment and nominations committee.
Led by the Solent Freeport Consortium Limited, the group consists of members from Associated British Ports, Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council, Solent Gateway and Southampton City Council.
Chairman Brian Johnson said: “The Solent Freeport is an investment in our future. It is our opportunity to firmly establish our region as a global hub for trade and maximise innovation opportunities which will bring the investment needed to regenerate our important coastal communities and create high-quality jobs for local people.
“The leadership the board provides is central to the success of the freeport and critical in ensuring we maximise the opportunities freeport status offers, both regionally and nationally.
“We are looking to appoint new independent, non-executive directors to the board to work with partners across all sectors, champion the freeport and help to deliver the aspirations of our region.”
