HAMPSHIRE care home deaths involving coronavirus have risen by 60 in one week, resulting in the highest total in the country.

Care home deaths in the Hampshire County Council area from 10th April to 1st May totalled 205 which is the highest amount in England, as reported by the Care Quality Commission, writes Fiona Callingham of the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Hampshire council’s adult social care and health cabinet member, Cllr Liz Fairhurst, said the council was working to support both council-run and private care homes.

“Every death is regrettable, and it’s desperately sad for the relatives,” she said. “People are working flat out. We are providing as much PPE and help as we can.”

Between 10th April and 1st May there were a total of 547 deaths in care homes in the Hampshire County Council area, with 205 of them coronavirus related.

They increased by seven in Portsmouth, to reach a total of 27, and 10 in Southampton to hit 28. Across England 6,391 out of 16,662 care homes deaths were linked to coronavirus.
