Engleburn care home resident celebrates 100th birthday with card from King Charles




A woman celebrating her 100th birthday got a visit from the mayor of New Milton Cllr Alvin Reid.

Olive Mingay puts her long life down to being “forunate and always keeping active mentally and physically”.

She loves gardening and reading, still reading her newspaper every morning.

Olive says she prides herself on being humble, positive and retaining a great sense of humour.”

Born on 21st February 1925, she is a distant relative of nursing legend Florence Nightingale. During her lifetime, Olive has experienced 24 prime ministers and five monarchs.

She also lived through World War II, saw the Berlin Wall come down and the creation of Concorde, and welcomed a new millennium.

After growing up in Thornton Heath she was married on 21st October 1950 to Norman Mingay, with whom she has four children. She now has three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The couple moved around, living in Wallington, Surrey, St Mary Cray, Kent, Whittlesea, Cambridgeshire, and lastly to Ashley.

Olive now lives at Engleburn care home in Barton.

During the war she serviced military vehicles and then worked in accounts for British Gas. She also worked in a jewellers in London’s famous Hatton Garden.

An avid fan of show jumping, Olive became a friend of legendary showjumper David Broome

At the age of 75 Olive flew for the first time in her life in 2001, travelling to Australia to see her cousins and other family members.
