Organisers of Totton and Eling Carnival confirm event to be axed due to lack of funding and support

A POPULAR New Forest carnival held for over 100 years is set to run for the last time this summer due to a lack of support.

Totton and Eling carnival has suffered from a shortage of funds and volunteers, says organisers, and this year’s Mardi Gras-themed event, which takes place on Saturday 21st June, will likely be the last.

The event, which was first held in 1914, is organised by a team of volunteers to raise funds for local good causes.

A statement from organisers said: “Unfortunately, this will probably be the final carnival parade. Since January of this year, we have sent out numerous posts requesting help and support in organising the day. It would appear our requests have fallen upon deaf ears as we have had very few offers of help.

“Also, due to lack of positive response from businesses and private individuals towards help with funding, the event cannot carry on.”

As reported in the A&T, it was also at risk just two years ago, after rising costs put it under threat.

Organisers launched a £1,000 fundraiser in 2023 to pay for set-up costs including insurance, first aid cover, licences, road closures, signs, barriers and radios.

Last year, the threat of rain did not deter locals from lining the streets to support the carnival, which had around 40 floats and walking entries alongside motorbikes, steam engines and marching bands.

Anyone interested in supporting the carnival is asked to make contact via the Facebook page or email tottonelingcarnival@gmail.com
