A PERSON died when they were hit by a train in an incident last night (Sunday) which affected rail services between Brockenhurst and Bournemouth.

Paramedics and British Transport Police officers responded to reports the collision had taken place on the line near Pokesdown station around 8.45pm.

The casualty was pronounced dead at the scene.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said on Monday: “At 8.44pm yesterday officers were called to Pokesdown station after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however, a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The power on the line along the route was switched off for about 90 minutes while crews dealt with the incident.

During this time, services faced delays, cancellations and changes.

One passenger reported on Twitter being held up at Brockenhurst railway station at around 10.30pm as delays continued after the line had been reopened.

A South Western Railway spokesperson told the A&T: "The emergency services dealt with an incident last night at 8.45pm near Pokesdown station.

"Some services along the route were terminated before reaching their destination until the service was restored at 10.15pm."
