Charity invites volunteers to get crafty in aid of Uganda girls project

A WORKSHOP to create hygiene kits for girls in Uganda is being held on Saturday in Fordingbridge.

The event is in aid of the Days for Girls project which aims to provide teenagers with washable sanitary pads, pants, flannels and soap.

There will be sewing and card-making at the workshop which is being hosted by St Mary’s church hall from 10am to 4pm.

The finished kits will be taken out to Kinkiizi in south-west Uganda. Girls in the region often miss out on school because they stay at home when they have their period.

The schools in the area are linked to the deanery which also supports other projects including a health centre and a bakery.

Days for Girls Fordingbridge team leader Irene Canton said: “Once reaching puberty, or starting their menstrual cycle, girls throughout the developing world are in danger of losing up to 25% of their education.

“A few yards of fabric can make the difference between graduating,or opting out early. This day will be fun and sociable but we aim to make as many kits as we can to make a real difference to the girls in Kinkiizi.”
