Christchurch Christmas lights switch-on 2023
There was fake snow, singing elves and a visit from Father Christmas at Christchurch’s Christmas lights switch-on.
More than a thousand people gathered in the High Street to enjoy a snowy wonderland with live music, festive shopping and food stalls helping them get into the festive spirit.
Christchurch mayor, Cllr Viv Charrett, said: “Saturday’s Christmas lights switch-on was a great family day out.
“From the moment the town crier and I opened up the event, the town was buzzing.”
Activities in Saxon Square included the Urban Displays Mountain Bike Stunt team and a petting zoo comprising three baby goats.
Headlining the live entertainment were 6 To The Bar, along with DJ Jay Rachet from Hot Radio, Sound of Soul Choir, and the Hush Club.
Families enjoyed free activities, including funfair ride and face painting.
The success of the event came after BCP Council refused to fund Christmas lights in the town this year.
As a result, the town council announced that “Christmas is not cancelled” and revealed they would be doing the decorating themselves.
Christchurch resident and local mum, Emily Harris, praised the council for its efforts: “It’s great having something like this in the town, I think it’s really important.
“I heard that it was getting cancelled and thought it was a real shame, so I’m really glad the town council have done it!”
