POPULAR Christchurch restaurant La Mamma which has served generations of families is to close after nearly 50 years.
In a statement, owner of the Italian eatery on Bridge Street, John Mirco, announced that it will close its doors for good on 31st October.
He said he had taken the decision with a “heavy heart”, adding that the restaurant had “become a cherished part of the local community”.
Mr Mirco did not give a reason why he had decided to close La Mamma after 47 years, but did hint that the pandemic had taken its toll on the business.
“Alas all good things must come to an end," he said.
His post on the restaurant’s Facebook page attracted more than 300 comments, with many calling it “the end of era.”
The news was greeted with dismay by many customers, with one saying: “My grandparents went there, my parents did, and I did. Sad to see it go.”
