Concern mounts for declining starling in RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch count

MORE than 18,900 Hampshire residents took part in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch, with the top three recorded in the county the blue tit, wood pigeon, and house sparrow.

The starling took fourth place amid nationwide concerns the species has seen its lowest number recorded.

Nationally the house sparrow held the top spot once again with blue tit remaining at number two, with woodpigeon and blackbird joining starling to make up the other top five most recorded species in UK gardens.

Amost 600,000 people took part in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey, conducted by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), counting more than nine million birds of over 80 species.
