Southern Water is blasted by Cllr Caroline Rackham for continued disruption to residents following burst main at its wastewater treatment station in Ashurst Bridge Road, Totton

A WATER firm has been slammed by a Totton councillor for causing ongoing disruption to residents following a burst sewer.

Southern Water tankers were recently sent to the wastewater pumping station at Ashurst Bridge Road after a main burst, with waste being moved to a sewer in Rumbridge Street, Totton.

As a result, part of the nearby car park was out of action and a bus stop on the Totton bypass temporarily taken out of service.

Now, despite the repairs to the sewer being complete, the car park remains unusable after damage was caused to the concrete by the weight of the tankers.

Cllr Caroline Rackham, who is chair of Totton and Eling Town Council, said the situation had been “awful” for residents and “very frustrating”.

She told the A&T: “Adding insult to injury, not only does Southern Water's maintenance schedule mean a car park and bus stop were out of action, but we now have continued works on the car park they used as a base. Residents have been poorly served here and Southern Water needs to do better.”

A spokesperson for Southern Water confirmed to the A&T its teams had been working to repair a burst rising main at its Ashurst Bridge water pumping station, which it described as “complex”.

It would finish the “clean-up phase” as soon as possible, it added.

Cllr Rackham has previously spoken about her concerns over the company’s failings, which includes a burst sewer at the Ashurst site last December, which also saw tankers deployed to take sewage to other nearby wastewater treatment works.

Playing fields at Hounsdown School in Totton were taken out of action in January after an on-site sewage pipe burst.
