Croatian taekwondo bronze for GB junior Maisy Cook
LYMINGTON’S Maisy Cook has returned from Croatia with a bronze medal from a world ranking taekwondo event.
Maisy, who attends Priestlands School, fought with the Great Britain junior national team at the tournament in Zagreb.
She achieved a well-deserved bronze medal in the -49kg junior taekwondo category which featured over 20 athletes from all over the world.
Maisy defeated a Croatian opponent 22-0 in the first round before seeing off another Croatian 33-16 in the quarter final.
She then fought a very tough and aggressive German fighter whom she has previously beaten in Luxembourg. Maisy fought hard and was leading by points up until the last 17 seconds when the German caught her with a spinning kick to level the score to 14-14. The bout then went to a golden point deciding round that unfortunately Maisy lost. However, it was a very positive trip for the Lymington teenager as she achieved a bronze at a world ranking event.
The German player went on to face Maisy’s GB team mate Aaliyah, the junior world champion, in the final. The GB athlete securing gold with a one-point win over the German fighter.
