Dan Snow delighted at 'surprising' MBE in Queen's birthday honours list

TV historian Dan Snow has expressed his surprise and appreciation at being named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Mr Snow, who lives in Exbury, was made an MBE for services to history alongside hundreds of VIPs and community figures being awarded for their work around the country.

“It is very surprising to be honoured alongside so many people who do much more than I do to contribute to our society,” Mr Snow (40) told the A&T.

“I am so lucky to be recognised for doing what I love.”

Mr Snow regularly presents history programmes for the BBC and recently launched his own online channel www.historyhit.tv.

Several Hampshire police officers were also honoured, including deputy chief constable Sara Glen (49) who was awarded a Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) having served 27 years.

The force said her “inspirational” leadership had helped the service respond to the growing complexity of crime, and support officers’ mental and physical wellbeing. She also leads nationally on issues such as early intervention to reduce offending.

DCC Glen, who joined Hampshire Constabulary in 1991, said: “I am as passionate and committed today as I was when I started policing, and I consider myself privileged to work with amazing people who dedicate their lives every day to serving the public, protecting people, and seeking justice for those who are targeted by criminals.”

Other Hampshire officers honoured included PC Mark Ranola, from Farnborough, who was made an OBE for services to policing and the community. Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes, the head of counter-terrorism policing in the south-east, was given a QPM.

Assistant chief constable Dave Hardcastle was awarded a Royal Victorian Order for his work in 2018 as Gold Commander of policing for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in October.

Chief constable Olivia Pinkney said: “I am incredibly proud that these officers have received these honours and I would like to offer my congratulations to them on behalf of the force.”

The chair of Hampshire Scout Expeditions, Adam Jollans, was also honoured by being made an MBE for services to Scouting and young people.
