Dave and Ella take over Mister Pinks Fish and Chips

EXTENDED summer opening times and a new menu featuring burgers and smaller portions are two initiatives planned by the new owners of Mister Pinks Fish and Chip shop in Milford.

Since taking the reins at the Church Hill shop just a week before Christmas, Dave Piner and Ella Fuell say business has been brisk, but they have also appreciated the opportunity to meet many of the local customers at this quieter time of year.

Dave said: “It’s been very steady, and it was always our intention to start at a slightly quieter period so we could really learn the ropes, and get to know the regular customers before the busy summer period.”

So far, the couple has introduced a number of new items to the Mister Pinks menu, including chicken burgers, veggie burgers, saveloy sausages, scampi, halloumi fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, garlic mushrooms and jalapeno poppers.

Ella said: “The burgers have been really popular and it’s been a good chance for us to try things out and see what customers like.”

Mister Pinks is something of a village institution, founded over 50 years ago by Malcolm Pink. After Malcolm retired, his son, Steve Pink, took over the business, which he ran for more than 40 years.

The shop was originally on the High Street towards Keyhaven but moved to its current location on Church Hill a number of years ago. Dave said: “Steve ran Mister Pinks for many years and is now enjoying his well-earned retirement.”

Dave and Ella currently employ six additional staff, but they will be recruiting for extra roles before the busy summer period. As well as retail customers, they also cater for large events at local venues including All Saints Church and The Bridge Community Centre.

The two met when they were both working at the nearby Smugglers Inn, as head chef and assistant manager. Ella said: “We both loved the Smugglers – it was like family so it was a big decision for us to leave, but we have had wonderful support from the village so far.”

Dave added: “A lot of customers have been in and said welcome to the village without realising I’ve been over at The Smugglers for the last 15 years. There are also a lot of customers that recognise us from there.”

Mister Pinks is open on Tuesday evenings, and Wednesday to Saturday lunchtimes and evenings. However, in the summer months the business will open six full days a week.

The couple has also been working on a new online ordering system which will allow customers to choose and pay for their food and then pick a time to click and collect. It will be available at misterpinks.touchtakeaway.net
