A MOTORIST has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a two-vehicle collision on the A337 between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst in which two people were hurt.

Paramedic teams, including the Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance, responded to the incident involving a Jaguar and a Mini which took place at Clay Hill around 7pm on Tuesday.

The driver of the Mini, a 33-year-old woman from Dorset, and the Jaguar’s passenger, a 59-year-old woman from Sway, were taken by land ambulance to Southampton General Hospital with minor injuries.

Hampshire police arrested on suspicion of attempted murder the Jaguar’s driver, a 71-year-old Sway man who was uninjured.

A force spokesperson said investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision were ongoing.

The road was closed in both directions for nearly 12 hours to allow officers to carry out a thorough examination of the scene.

A post on the Hampshire Roads Policing Twitter account around 8.25pm said: “We’re currently dealing with a collision on the A337 between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst.

“Closed in both directions between junction with Balmer Lawn Hotel & one-way system at Lyndhurst. Likely to be in place for some time.

“Apologies for any inconvenience, we’re working to reopen ASAP.”

The road was not reopened until around 7am the following morning. In a tweet announcing the route was clear, the police thanked the public for their patience.

Local firefighters also attended the incident, and they remained for about half an hour to ensure the vehicles were safe.

A police spokesperson told the A&T: “We were called at 7.10pm yesterday (20th August) following a collision involving two cars on the A337 between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst.

“The cars involved were a Jaguar and a Mini. The driver of the Mini, a 33-year-old woman from Dorset, and the passenger of the Jaguar, a 59-year-old woman from Sway, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Southampton General Hospital.

“The driver of the Jaguar, a 71-year-old man from Sway, who was uninjured, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody at this time.

“Investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing.”
