A FORMER school secretary is challenging her conviction for assaulting a pupil.

Jane Farmer (56), of Book Avenue, New Milton, was convicted of one count of assault by beating and sentenced to do 100 hours of community work after a trial at Southampton Magistrates’ Court. It related to an incident at Arnewood School in January.

This week Southampton Crown Court confirmed that Farmer had lodged an appeal and the matter is due to be heard on 17th December.

Richard Griffiths & Co Solicitors, who are acting for Farmer, did not respond to a request for a comment.

As reported in the A&T, the trial was told she did not dispute coming into contact with the student but said she had put out her hand to stop him because he appeared to be falling over.

However, the prosecution claimed a “slapping” sound was heard as the youngster passed through a doorway, caused by Farmer striking the boy.

The trial heard although she had an administrative job at the school, her office was based within a classroom setting.

After the sentencing – at which Farmer was also told to pay £705 court costs – Arnewood School revealed she had resigned from her role there.
