Ex-Forest MP in self-isolation to reveal politics behind the scenes
A 90-YEAR-OLD former New Forest MP who is self-isolating in Beaulieu is taking to the internet tonight (Tuesday) to give three decades of insight into the life and times of Britain and its prime ministers.
Sir Patrick McNair-Wilson represented the district in the House of Commons from 1968 to 1997, winning the seat eight times for the Conservatives.
From his home in Beaulieu, he will appear online via Zoom to take questions during a 20-minute session for public speaking club Hamwic Speakers.
Sir Patrick’s son Guy, an architect and television producer and director, is a member of Hamwic. Just last year the organisation made national headlines by helping two Lymington women overcome their fear of public speaking during a competition.
It is part of the Toastmasters international (USA) network which provides an opportunity for people to practice their public speaking skills in a non-judgemental environment.
Sir Patrick was educated at Eton College and served in Palestine and North Africa after being commissioned in the Coldstream Guards as a younger man. Over his political career he has witnessed first-hand behind the scenes of public life.
He was also a broadcaster and director of the London Municipal Society before becoming a Conservative MP.
The Hamwic Club said on Facebook: “Guy's father, Sir Patrick McNair-Wilson (90), was the UK Member of Parliament for the New Forest (and briefly Lewisham) during the period between 1964 and 1997.
“This covers many prime ministers, including Margaret Thatcher, and other key events such as the Falklands War.
“This speech allows members to pose questions about his views on past and present politics, and any potential national emergencies that were faced during that period.”
The session starts tonight at 7.30pm and will be available to view on the Zoom video conferencing platform.
