Family on broken down boat off Calshot get lucky when they flag down off-duty RNLI volunteers

A FAMILY whose boat broke down while sailing off Calshot was in luck when they flagged down off-duty lifeboat crew on a fishing trip.

The vessel had got into difficulty while carrying the four crew and a dog, and they were left sat at anchor.

Having signalled a passing motorboat for help, they were surprised to discover it was manned by three Calshot RNLI volunteer helms.

The trio were out on a craft belonging to one of them, which is well-known around the Solent as ‘Down on the Boat’.

An online post by Calshot RNLI afterwards said: “Volunteer helms Graham, Damian and Ant were taking time off from their usual pager duties to head out for a day’s fishing, but gladly stopped to help, quickly setting up an astern tow and taking the stricken family back to Calshot.

“With a job well done, the three crew carried on their fishing trip, which turned out to be pretty successful with a good few bass caught between them.”

People took to the comments to praise them for stopping to help while enjoying some down time.

One person wrote: “Great work. That was lucky timing for them and showed total dedication and commitment as always from you guys.”
