Environment Agency warns of possible flooding this afternoon (Wednesday) at Christchurch Harbour, Ringwood and Brockenhurst
FLOODING could occur in parts of Christchurch and the New Forest today (Wednesday), the Environment Agency is warning.
The organisation has issued a flood alert for Christchurch Harbour and tidal stretches of the Lower Stour and Avon rivers due to the high tide forecast at 2.30pm.
The public are being urged to take care on beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths.
The EA said: “Sea spray overtopping along the coast is possible and high water levels in the harbour are forecast.
“Flooding to roads and low-lying land is possible and conditions can apply one to two hours either side of high tide.”
It added: “We are closely monitoring the situation and our incident response staff will be closing flood gates if necessary.”
A flood warning for Barrack Road and Willow Way in Christchurch, along with a flood alert for Ringwood, both issued yesterday, remain in place.
It states: “Flooding is forecast, with low-lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around tributaries between Ringwood and Christchurch.”
The organisation has also issued a flood alert for Brockenhurst due to rising water levels in the Lymington River and warned it may be upgraded to a flood warning if heavy rain forecast for tomorrow materialises.
