Environment Agency issues flood alert and warning for Blackwater River at Ower and Cadnam River

HOMEOWNERS in Wellow and Ower are being warned to brace for potential flooding today (Wednesday).

Both a flood alert and more serious flood warning have been issued for areas covering Landford to East Wellow and Wade Bridge on the River Blackwater, and Cadnam to Ower on the Cadnam River.

The Environment Agency is warning locals to “be prepared” for flooding until at least 11am.

An agency spokesperson said: “The water level in the River Blackwater at Wellow and Ower is high and rising.

“Over 30mm of rain has been recorded at Romsey on Tuesday, which is a lot. Nearly half a month's worth of rain, and follows a very wet September.

“Throughout Wednesday, more significant out of bank flooding will affect land and roads at West Wellow, Landford and Ower.

“The river could be high enough to flood the Mill at East Wellow.”

The spokesperson added that the worst of the rain has now cleared the area with only scattered showers forecast for the weekend.

The agency spokesperson said: “Our operations staff are ensuring the River Blackwater is kept free of blockages and we continue to monitor the forecast.

“Please take the appropriate action to protect property and ensure pumps used to lower water levels are operating.”

If the river is affected by further heavy showers, property flooding is possible, at which point the agency said it would update its advice for locals.
