‘Immediate action required’, says Environment Agency as it issues flood warnings for areas around the River Stour in Christchurch

A FLOOD warning is in force in Christchurch, with another for the town this afternoon, as the River Stour is expected to burst its banks.

The Environment Agency has issued the alerts within days of the area having been hit by torrential rain and strong winds amid storms Herminia and Éowyn, saying immediate action is required for both.

Now in force is a warning for the Lower Stour at Jumpers Common and A35 Iford Bridge area.

People are warned rising river levels are expected to cause flooding this afternoon.

Areas expected to be worst hit are River Glade, Dukesfield, Squirrels Close, Stour Way, Links Drive, Burford Close, Cedar Avenue, Chestnut Avenue, Beech Avenue, Sycamore Close, River Way, Hurn Way, Wilton Close, Stourcroft Drive, Crossways, De Redvers Court, Oak Avenue, The Grove and Stourvale Avenue.

“Further rainfall is forecast this afternoon. We are closely monitoring the situation,” the EA said.

“Activate any property flood protection products you may have.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses. Don't put yourself or others at risk.”

The second alert, for Lower Stour at Iford Bridge Home Park, warns flooding is expected for the accommodation site from 3pm today.

“Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Lower Dorset Stour, with low-lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around Iford Bridge Home Park,” the EA said.

“Further rainfall is forecast throughout the afternoon but no further flooding is expected.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and liaising with emergency services and local authorities.”

If residents have been evacuated from their home they are urged to only return once emergency services have advised it is safe to do so.

People are also told to stay away from floodwater as it contains hidden dangers such as open manhole covers, sewage and chemicals.

The EA has issued a raft of advice, including acting on any flood plan, moving family and pets to a safe place, moving vehicles to higher ground if safe to do so, and using equipment such as flood barriers to protect properties.

Businesses should also inform staff and customers, ensure that they can get to safety and move stock to a safe place.
