NFDC improving footpaths and boardwalks in Milford, Hythe and Ringwood

NEW footpaths, boardwalks and better drainage have improved local green spaces in Hythe, Ringwood, and Milford.

The enhancements are part of the New Forest District Council’s Green Way recreational mitigation strategy, which is aimed at alleviating the impact that increasing visitor numbers and dog walking are having on the areas.

Work was funded by the community infrastructure levy, which is a charge made on new residential developments and offsets any ‘infrastructure pressures’ arising from them.

In Hythe, NFDC has worked to create a walking route through open countryside by adding new access gates, widening the footpath and constructed a new boardwalk at Depedene, between Claypits Lane and Challenger Way. The entrance points also have swing gates suitable for wheelchair user access.

Poulner Lakes in Ringwood have now been improved with footpaths with additional drainage works to ensure the routes remain usable all year.

In Milford Pleasure Gardens, footbridges have been replaced and a boardwalk built to provide greater access. Signage will be added to promote the circular walking routes and to help with navigating through the grounds.

Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, said: “This project has been a great opportunity to provide residents with high-quality walking routes and improved access to green and natural spaces.

“We are looking into future Green Way schemes and hope residents will enjoy these enhanced spaces all year around.”
