Environment Agency issues flood warning for River Blackwater and alert for Bartley River
RISING river levels could cause flooding in parts of the New Forest today (Monday).
The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Landford to Wade Bridge on the River Blackwater after 19.4mm of rainfall was recorded in the area in the past 24 hours.
The warning states: “This total, whilst not that large, has simply added to a river which is already high as a result of rainfall recorded over the last few days. Over the next 12 to 24 hours, more significant out of bank flooding will affect land and roads from at West Wellow, Landford and Ower.”
The river is expected to peak at around 2pm, it adds, with staff ensuring it’s kept free from blockages.
Advice to those living nearby includes activating flood protection measures, as well as moving important items and valuables upstairs or to a safe place. Gas, electricity and water mains supplies should be switched off before flood water starts to enter. The public are also advised to avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
The agency has also issued a less serious alert for Bartley Water, with flooding possible in parts of Woodlands and Ashurst.
It states: “At Ashurst Bridge and Woodland Road, near to Hazel Grove, the water level is high and rising. In the last 18 hours, nearly half a month’s rain – 26mm – has been recorded at Testwood. “Out of bank flooding will affect land, roads and gardens at Woodlands and Ashurst. Avoid flooded roads near the river, as flood water will be deep in some locations.
“Impacts are not expected at Totton, Rumbridge or Eling.”
