Ninety animals on offer at first New Forest Livestock Society pony sale of the year
THE first New Forest Livestock Society pony sale of the year has seen 90 animals on offer at the Beaulieu Road sales yard.
The New Forest Livestock Society (NFLS), in conjunction with Southern Counties Auctioneers (SCA), recorded 90 entries across all the sections; comprising registered New Forest ponies; part-bred New Forest ponies and other horses, ponies and donkeys.
Portmore Rico, a roan three-year-old gelding owned by Jonathan Gerrelli, was the highest priced registered New Forest pony at the event, selling for £2,050. Rico is Forest-bred and sired by Portmore Thundercloud.
Other top prices of registered New Forest ponies included Cathy Stride’s brown four-year-old filly Hazelhill Little Scrumpet, fetching £1,500, and Charlotte Lines’ bay yearling filly Ridley Architect, achieving £920.
Before the sale, the NFLS held a young stock show for registered New Forest ponies. All animals entered were required to be halter broken and able to lead out. They were presented to Faye Turner, an independent judge.
There were two classes – one for yearling fillies, colts, and geldings, and the other for two, three and four-year-old fillies, colts, and geldings.
The highest placed Forest-bred animal from each class then went forward to a championship and overall championship.
The overall champion and Forest-bred champion was Ridley Architect, and the reserve overall champion and reserve Forest-bred champion was Hazelhill Little Scrumpet.
