Former Swish student launches Lymington theatre school

A NEW performing arts group has been launched in Lymington by a former theatre school pupil who went on to enjoy an acting career in London.

Founder Catherine Irlam, who trained with the Christchurch-based Swish of the Curtain, has returned to the New Forest to set up her own branch at Walhampton School.

The Saturday morning classes are aimed at three to 14 year olds, teaching acting, singing and dancing for musical theatre.

Catherine started going to classes when she was 10 years old, and went on to star in numerous productions at the Pavilion Theatre in Bournemouth, including 42nd Street, Footloose, and Fame.

“I was fortunate to be selected for the Swish Ensemble and participated in various festivals and show choir competitions,” she said. “Most notably, we came runners-up on Channel 5’s Don’t Stop Believing, judged by a panel of prominent figures within the entertainment industry including Tamzin Outhwaite, Duncan James, and Anastacia.”

Catherine attended the International College of Musical Theatre in London, before securing a professional role in a touring production of Aladdin in which she played Princess Jasmine.

“This opportunity opened doors to various touring productions and roles with London theatre companies, allowing me to expand my repertoire and perform in both classic and contemporary works,” she said. “Additionally, I gained screen experience through a variety of TV segments and short films.”

In 2017 Catherine was accepted into ArtsEd, gaining a Master’s degree in acting and discovering a passion for teaching. After completing a tour of David Walliams’ Mr Stink, Catherine decided to take a break from acting and return to the New Forest, where she was approached about setting up her own branch of the Swish stage school.

“We launched Swish Lymington in September and the response has been overwhelmingly positive,” she said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see so many enthusiastic students walk through our doors each week.

“I am dedicated to creating a supportive and inspiring environment where every child can thrive. I look forward to welcoming many more students to discover the joy of performing arts through Swish.”

Swish offers a free two-week trial so children can experience the classes before committing. To find out more visit: https://www.lymington.swish.school
