Four animals killed on New Forest roads in one week
THIS cow was among four commoners’ animals that died in a week of carnage on New Forest roads which saw a total of 12 reported collisions.
The cow was killed on the notorious B3054 between Hilltop and Ipers Bridge at 9.30pm last Thursday.
The previous Monday a pony met its death on the B3056 at Pigbush at 5.15pm. On Wednesday a donkey wearing a reflective collar was killed between Ipley Manor and the crossroads at 7.20am.
On Saturday a brown filly had to be destroyed after it was injured on Forest Road at Longcross at 6.15am.
The eight other New Forest animal accidents reported to the verderers during the week, in which animals were either injured or could not be located, included two hit-and-runs involving pigs in Burley on Sunday.
The previous week a black Shetland mare was killed on the B3054 at Norleywood crossroads.
Reacting to the New Forest animal accidents, clerk to the verderers Sue Westwood told the A&T: “We have had a bad run of accidents and they really highlight the need to be very careful when driving across the Forest.
"I would urge people to stay well below the speed limit, especially if visibility is impaired by oncoming vehicles.”
