NFDC offers free car parking in village and town car parks on four dates in December

PARKING will be free across New Forest District Council-owned village and town car parks on four dates in December.

The initiative – which excludes amenity and coastal car parks – is designed to “encourage residents to shop locally” during the festive season.

A report to the council’s cabinet member for environment and sustainability, Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, who approved the proposal, states: “In the past six years, NFDC have allowed four days when charges do not apply in town and village centre car parks to assist businesses.

“This initiative has been well-received and supports the public at what is for many a difficult time of year financially, as well as promoting the use of local businesses for Christmas shopping.”

The first day of free parking has been chosen to coincide with Small Business Saturday on 7th December, as well Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd December.

Parish and town councils can also request the fourth date to benefit from free parking to support their Christmas events.

The report adds: “The loss of income from these days is accepted in light of the financial benefits it brings to the local businesses and communities.

“It is estimated that due to the use of parking clocks by a percentage of car park users that the loss of income would be less than £10,000 over the whole period.”
