Christchurch resident among victims of jailed courier fraudsters Danny Ngo and Dervill Rickman

TWO fraudsters have been jailed for conning 11 victims across the country, including a Christchurch resident, out of thousands of pounds.

Dorset Police led the investigation into the scam, which saw Danny Ngo and Dervill Rickman, both from London, put behind bars four years later.

The Christchurch resident was one of three elderly and vulnerable victims targeted in the county – the others being from Bournemouth and Poole. This trio lost a total of £18,000 to the offenders.

Further victims were identified in the Devon and Cornwall area, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, Bedfordshire and Nottinghamshire. The total loss to all of them was more than £67,000.

Ngo (28) and 27-year-old Rickman were sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court after admitting conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

Ngo was jailed for four years and Rickman was sent down for 32 months.

A third defendant, Raquel Viamonte (24), also from London, is due to be sentenced on 12th July.

The charge against the defendants related to a series of courier fraud offences committed between 21st April and 5th June 2020.

They involved the victims being called on the phone and told they had an issue with their internet connection and were due compensation.

The victims were told to download an app, allowing the defendants to remotely access their home computers.

Tricking them into thinking they had been paid too much compensation, the defendants persuaded the victims to withdraw cash from their banks.

A courier then collected the money, or the victim posted it to an address.

Dorset Police identified the county’s three victims after being alerted on 5th May 2020.

Enquiries resulted in a series of warrants being executed in London on 3rd June 2020, leading to Ngo and Rickman’s arrests.

They were released under investigation and Viamonte was subsequently interviewed by officers after evidence was found linking her to the conspiracy.

All three were subsequently charged.

DC Tom Norman, of BCP CID, said: “These defendants were involved in a significant conspiracy to defraud elderly and vulnerable victims in various areas around the country.

“We have led on this extensive investigation to compile evidence of their offending and ultimately hold them accountable for their actions.

“We will continue to do all we can to protect vulnerable victims from fraudsters and will take robust action against those committing offences.”
