From a humble shed to a high street school - UKG Language opens new centre in Ringwood

A FIRM that started life in a humble garden shed has just opened a language and learning centre in Ringwood High Street.

Family-run UKG Language was set up by Helen Herridge 15 years ago to provide support and educational opportunities for international students.

She dreamed of having a town centre facility and has now transformed a derelict bank.

Town mayor Rae Frederick recently performed a ribbon cutting ceremony with Helen and her husband Luke.

Speaking at the event, the mayor praised UKG Language’s mission, highlighting its benefits not only for students but also for the wider community, and commended the team for “creating such an inspiring learning environment”.

Reflecting on the journey her business has taken, Helen said: “Seeing UKG Language grow from an idea into this incredible new centre is a dream come true.

“More than just a school, we’ve created a place where students can feel at home, build confidence, and connect with others through language. The support from the community has been amazing, and we are so excited for what’s ahead.”

Helen says the company has a “strong commitment to both local and international students”.

The new centre in the old Barclays Bank building has been transformed into a “dynamic space” where students of all ages can learn English or a new language in a welcoming and engaging environment.

The arrival of international students in Ringwood will not only introduce opportunities for cultural exchange and learning but also boost the local economy, bringing increased footfall to shops, cafés, and services.

Local families can also house students for payment, while also making a “meaningful difference in a student’s life”.

UKG Language says it provides “an alternative education provision, offering a flexible and supportive environment for students who are unable to attend mainstream school”.

“This ensures that every learner, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive, grow in confidence, and reach their full potential,” it said.

UKG Language also supports Ringwood’s young learners with GCSE and SATs revision sessions, providing personalised group sessions that focus on exam techniques, structured learning, and building confidence.

The centre has also partnered with Educamps Adventures to offer English and Adventure Summer Camps, where students combine language learning with outdoor activities such as kayaking, climbing, and mountain biking. These unique camps provide an engaging and immersive way for students to develop their English skills while experiencing the great outdoors.
