New Forest District Council launches golden ticket competition as it begins wheelie bin rollout

CHARLIE and the Chocolate Factory-style golden tickets have been hidden in wheelie bins which are being rolled out across the New Forest.

But the winners won’t be treated to a song-laden fantastical tour of a bin manufacturer hosted by an unhinged proprietor.

The five lucky ticket-holders can choose from an annual garden waste subscription, a New Forest Show family ticket, a compost bin or water butt, one free bulky waste collection, or a £50 donation to the chairman’s charity.

As reported in the A&T, the council is axing weekly collections of general waste and recycling in sacks, with properties in phase one – including New Milton and Lymington – receiving their new bins from this week.

Residents will be provided with two bins: a black lidded 180-litre bin for general waste, and a green lidded 240-litre one for recyclable items, collected on alternate weeks.

The council will also issue each home with a brown outdoor caddy and a smaller grey indoor caddy for food waste, which will be collected weekly.

Along with the bins, residents will receive a ‘Get Set’ leaflet, and an initial roll of bin liner caddies will also be provided.

The council’s cabinet member for environment and sustainability, Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, said: "I encourage residents receiving their new bins to check their food waste caddy.

“Not only for the chance to win with the golden ticket, but also as the ‘Get Set’ leaflet contains useful information about the new waste collection service, such as what can be put in their food waste caddies.”

Phase two of the rollout, which covers the west and north-west of the Forest and includes Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Burley, and surrounding areas, will start in October.

Residents in phase three, the east and north-east of the Forest, including Totton, Hythe, and Marchwood, will not receive their bins until March 2026.

Residents whose properties are deemed unsuitable for wheelie bins will be written to. They will still receive two lots of recycling sacks from the council per year, but will need to buy their own black sacks for waste.
