ARNEWOOD School’s Maddie Saunders has capped off a fantastic year on the track with selection for the Great Britain Cycle Speedway training camps.

Maddie, who represents Poole CSC, has been selected to attend the first of Future GB training camps in Leicester alongside the very best riders across the country in preparation for next year’s World Championships in Poland.

This year 13-year-old Maddie becoming the youngest ever winner of the South West U18 girls’ regional GP championship staged over seven rounds of competitive racing.

She also defended the British Women’s Supertrax League GP Series over the four rounds with first place finishes in East Park (Wolverhampton), Poole and Sheffield and a third-place finish in Norwich. At East Park Maddie also won the Joe Guy Memorial Junior Individual title.

On the national stage Maddie finished runner-up in both the British U14 and U16 girls’ individual championship at Astley & Tydesley (Manchester) and Sheffield. She also went on to finish a creditable tied seventh in the British Women’s Open Championship in Hull CSC in August.

Maddie also played a vital role in helping Poole win the U14s British Club championship at Kesgrave (Ipswich) and was the only girl in the competition.

She partnered fellow Poole teammate and current World U16 girls Champion Macie Schmidt to victory in the National Elite Pairs Event in Sheffield.

Maddie is now training hard ready for next year’s campaign and has another treat in store in February when she has been invited to attend the 2018 British Cycling awards dinner at the NEC to collect her national title certificates.
