COUNCILLORS gave the green light to plans for two homes in an Everton back garden despite claims they would spoil the area for neighbouring properties.

Members supported H.B Holdings’ scheme to build the three-bedroom family properties behind a home known as Richmond, at 304 Everton Road, after noting they will go on the open market as part of the government’s Help to Buy scheme.

Some on New Forest District Council’s planning committee admitted their reluctant support was only because they saw no reason under planning law to refuse it.

However, Cllr Alan Glass was fully behind it, saying: “They have done the best they can and are providing houses where they are needed.”

To accommodate the homes, parking and turning on land which wraps around the existing dwelling, a garage and shed structures will be demolished and some of the garden concreted over and trees around the boundary edge felled.

There had been strong objection by Hordle Parish Council, which said it was over-development, wildlife and trees would be lost and there would be overlooking. There were 12 objections from residents, including claims it would “permanently impair” neighbouring homes.

However, architect Matt Stevens argued it would make use of “underutilised” land and provide family homes for first-time buyers. He said the developer had wanted three homes but scaled down after discussions with NFDC officers, who recommended approval of the scheme.

Members noted if they went against the recommendation the decision would likely be overturned at appeal anyway.
