Picking Patch campaign launched to support gardeners at Minstead Trust’s Furzey Gardens

GARDENERS with learning disabilities hope people will dig deep to support their fundraising campaign to create a new orchard in the Forest.

Supported gardeners Matt, Dan and Kieran launched the campaign, called The Picking Patch, with the aim of transforming a paddock at Furzey Gardens in Minstead into an orchard.

They said they want to create a dedicated space where they can “build confidence, refine their skills, and take pride in their achievements”.

A spokesperson for Furzey Gardens said: “Every day, Furzey’s supported gardeners work tirelessly to maintain the beautiful gardens that visitors cherish.

“Now, they need help to create their own special sanctuary – a peaceful space designed just for them and not open to the public.

“Matt, Dan, and Kieran are among the dedicated supported gardeners leading The Picking Patch campaign.

“With their skills and passion, they plan to turn the paddock into a vibrant orchard, producing fresh fruit and creating a haven for wildlife.”

Describing his excitement for the project ahead, Dan said: “I am happy we are doing fruit trees, and this will be our first year growing fruit.

“We will be involved in it, and that’s what I’m looking forward to. I just like working with the other guys and talking to the customers.”

The gardeners are raising funds to purchase essential items such as electric tools, which will help them work more independently.
