Hear ye, hear ye! Last call to enter Christchurch town crier contest
THE centre of Christchurch will ring to the sound of outlandishly loud voices on Saturday in a competition to find the new town crier.
As reported by the A&T, mayor Cllr Sue Bungey has pledged ahead of the jubilee celebrations in the summer to revive the role which was last filled by the Keith Jackman for 25 years.
Cllr Bungey said that since that story was published, the original town crier’s robe has been found and is waiting for a new owner to wear it following tomorrow's event which will start at 12pm in Saxon Square.
She said: “We have some very good candidates but it’s not too late to apply to the mayor’s secretary to enter or just turn up on the day.”
The judges will be the mayor, Wimborne town crier Chris Brown, Chris Guest from Druitt Hall, and a member of the Christchurch Business Improvement District which is sponsoring the event.
Cllr Bungey said: “Whilst this is a serious appointment, we hope to make the event as happy and colourful as possible – so members of the public, do come along and support your preferred candidate.”
