New Milton driver Gary Horbury pleads guilty to causing the death of Margaret Fraser (89) through careless driving




A LORRY driver has admitted his careless driving caused the death of a grandmother in New Milton town centre.

Gary Horbury (58), of Ferndale Road, pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court on Friday to the charge, which related to the death of Margaret Fraser.

The 89-year-old was on a shopping trip and crossing Station Road close to the Boots store when she was struck by the delivery lorry Horbury was driving. It happened just after 1pm on 20th January 2020 and the route was shut for about seven hours afterwards.

Horbury was granted bail to return to the same court to be sentenced on 27th September.

As reported in the A&T, in the wake of Margaret’s death her family paid tribute to her, saying she was an "inspirational" person who was known for her friendliness and zest for life.

"She lived a contented and very happy life, always chatting to people she met and enjoying the simple pleasures," said daughter Debbie and son Alan.

Margaret, who lived in Waverley Road, used her four-wheeled walker on frequent trips to the shops and further afield in Barton and Lymington.

Debbie and Alan added: "We hope that mum’s legacy will be for people to take the time to chat and be kind to each other; it could just brighten someone’s day, as we are sure she did for many over the years."
