NFDC to decide on application for 20 new 'affordable' flats on Salisbury Road in Totton

A PROPOSAL has been submitted to New Forest District Council to build 20 new 'affordable' flats in Totton.

Developer Diego Diez wants to demolish the existing buildings at 37-39 Salisbury Road to make way for two new blocks of flats with cycle storage and landscaping.

In his application, Mr Diez said: "This proposal seeks to demolish the remaining tired and ageing structure on the site of number 37.

"The site is now vacant and is no longer fit for use following the previous occupier relocating.

"This will be replaced by 20 much-needed affordable dwellings."

Number 37 was formerly home to youth mental health charity It's Your Choice which moved to a site in Junction Road before closing last year when it ran out of money.

Mr Diez said his proposal would see the construction of eight one-bed flats, seven two-bed and five four-bed, adding that number 39 was also vacant.

He added: "It is the intention of NFDC to deliver this site as 100% affordable housing to meet the housing needs of Totton."

The applicant proposes building a 2.5-storey block of 12 flats on one site and a two-storey block of eight flats on the other.

He added: "The design approach has been carefully considered to ensure that it responds positively to the surrounding context.

"The surrounding local context has formed a key reference for the proposed scale and massing and the proposals seek to ensure that they remain in keeping with this."

NFDC has received four positive and four negative responses from the public in relation to the scheme.

One comment noted the proposal offers "zero parking" which will add to pressure on nearby car parks.
