Huge renovation set for Christchurch’s iconic former town hall, the Mayor’s Parlour, in the High Street
CHRISTCHURCH’S iconic former town hall is set for a huge restoration project.
The “comprehensive” remedial work will address the deteriorating roof and stonework of the hall.
There have been concerns over the corrosion of lead which prompted the town council to take action to “restore the cherished building”.
In a statement it said it would be taking “proactive measures” and that the “large scale project” will including repairing water damage and redecorating internal areas.
The council said it is: “Committed to preserving the historical and architectural assets throughout the town, Christchurch Town Council is dedicated to ensuring that the old town hall remains in impeccable condition.”
Town mayor Viv Charrett added: "The old town hall, also known as the Mayor’s Parlour, is a lovely building in a prominent part of the High Street. It is grade II listed and, as such, we have a responsibility to look after it and ensure it remains in excellent condition.
“It is used for many civic events during the year and after the renovation we intend to open it up to more community uses over the coming years.
“We very much look forward to seeing it restored to its former glory very soon.”
The project is hoped to be finished by this spring. It will then become a “vibrant hub for the community”. The Mayor’s Parlour will be available for hire for charity events and facilitating community associations.
Elcock Associates has been appointed to oversee the project. Its senior quantity surveyor, John Hayes, said: “We are delighted to be working with Christchurch Town Council, Greendale, and the local community on this prestigious project.
“The town hall is steeped in history, and we hope the renovation works will allow many people to enjoy the building in the future.
“It has been interesting discovering some original features that have been covered up over the years that will now be back on show.”
